HIKING

A) Vikos Gorge

The suggested itinerary begins from the village Monodendri and ends at the village of Vikos. Vikos Gorge is a miracle of nature, a beauty that holds a world record: with walls that reach 1350 meters high, it has been designated by Guinness book the deepest gorge in the world. However, this distinction is not the only reason to hike it; as you will be given the opportunity to admire the pristine and unadorned natural environment, which is offered as a refuge for many endangered species of the flora and fauna. The layers of the steep slopes reveal the geological history of Pindos Mountain.

B) Drakolimni of Tymfi

On the high mountains of Pindos, in Zagori, and the surrounding areas, alpine lakes adorn the barren landscape. The calm, dark and mysterious side induces awe. The eerie landscape of the alpine lakes of Pindos, popular both among climbers and locals shepherds, has spawned many legends. The most exciting of them is about dragons and it is the one behind the name of the lakes, which were possibly born in the form of alpine tritons. You can explore the Drakolimni with a day hike (start usually from Papigo and takes 8 hours in total). The route starts from the village of Mikro Papigo. After hiking for 3.30 hours we arrive at the shelter. After 1.30 extra hour we reach, the 2.150 meters in Drakolimni. We make a stop for a picnic and then return by the same route.

C) Scala of Vradeto

Scala of Vradeto was built in the late 18th century to unite the village Vradeto to the rest of Zagori. It is the largest of the four staircases that have been preserved in central Zagori and was constructed using a method of dry stone processing. . The staircase was until 1973 the only connection of the village to the rest of the world. It consists of 1200 steps and 39 turns and ends in the village of Kapesovo, offering images of unique beauty. During the hike we will visit the Veloi view point, a natural balcony that offers a commanding view of the Vikos ravine.

D) Papigo - Voidomatis Springs - Vikos village

The hike starts from Papigo village. We move on a downhill path which is mostly wooded. To our left, we enjoy the impressive view offered by the Astraka Peaks and the gravel of Kokkinos Lithario. To our right, we have an impressive view of the green gorge of Ano Voidomatis. After approaching the dolomitic formations of the canyon, we enter the last part of the Vikos canyon.

There we will meet the sources of the Voidomatis river, one of the cleanest rivers in Europe! After taking a rest break and enjoying a picnic to regain energy, we will visit the monastery of Panagia, built in 1763 and located next to the springs of Voidomatis. We continue our hike towards the village of Vikos, on an uphill path for about 45 minutes, where this beautiful hiking route will end. In the village of Vikos, a Trekking Hellas vehicle will be waiting for us to take us back to Papigo.

E. Hiking in the Voidomatis Gorge

The Voidomatis Gorge Hike follows a well-marked and passable path along the banks of the Voidomatis River, in the heart of the Vikos-Aoos National Park.

We start at the western exit of the famous Vikos canyon, at the Bridge of Aristis.

We pass through century-old plane trees, alder and other trees that make up a magical scenery. Along this three-hour route, we discover the shallow caves (rock roofs), which were inhabited by primitive people during the prehistoric era. In these caves, numerous stone tools and bones of animals, that were their prey, have been found.

Our route also passes by the charming church of Agioi Anargyroi, which dates back to the 17th century. Our path ends after the single arched stone bridge of Kledonia.

F) Hiking on the paths and stone bridges of Zagori 

The hike to the bridges and villages of Zagori is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hikes! Our hike starts from the village of Kipoi. The route passes imposing stone, arched bridges of the 17th-18th century, such as the single-arched bridge of Pistionis, the bridge of Mylos and the three-arched bridge of Plakidas. We tour the village of Koukouli and if we want we can visit the Lazaridis Folklore Museum. The museum is located  in the traditional house of its creator, Kostas Lazaridis, who lovingly collected all the rare flora of Vikos.

The visitor can admire a multitude of medicinal plants that thrive in the area and learn about the miraculous profession of the famous "Vico-doctors". After our tour of the village of Koukouli, we descend the "Staircase of Koukouli" towards the village of Kipoi, closing our beautiful circle.
